to washington this week and with just 36 days left to avert the so-called fiscal cliff becoming more apparent that senate republicans want a deal and they would like one pretty quick. but while there may be a bi-p t bipartisan consensus to raise taxes on the wealthy, the sides are still far apart on where the revenue will come from. staff level negotiations are a little bit more than stalled. not fully stalled but they didn't go so great last week and it's unclear where speaker boehner will get the votes for a deal that would raise tax rates. which is why he's pushing against that idea. two senate republicans up for re-election in 2014 have bucked norquist saying they are willing to let taxes ride. chambliss spoke to his hometown station. >> that pledge i signed 20 years ago was valid then. it's valid now, but times have changed significantly. and i care more about this country than i do about a 20-year-old pledge. >> on sunday south carolina senator lindsey graham also broke ranks saying the norquist pledge can no longer be a conservative litmus test. >> when you're $16 trillion in it debt,

tightening built into law, the so-called fiscal cliff. the realization of all the automatic tax increases and spending cuts that make up the fiscal cliff absent offsetting changes would pose a substantial threat to recovery. indeed, by the reckoning of the congressional budget office, and that of many outside observers, a fiscal shock of that size would send the economy toppling back into recession. second, early in the new year it will be necessary to improve and increase the federal debt limit to -- approved an increase in the federal dedead -- debt limit. the threat of default in the summer of 2011 fueled economic uncertainty and badly damaged confidence even though an agreement was ultimately reached. a failure to reach a timely agreement this time around could impose even heavier economic and financial costs. as this policy makers face these critical decisions, they should keep two decisions in mind. first, the federal gobudget is on an unsustainable path. the budget deficit, which peaked 2009, is expected to narrow further in the coming years as the economy continues to recover. how

so. framing it up a little bit, the fiscal cliff issue we talk about all day here, and talking about all week, is really important, and i we have to make progress w towards a sustainable budget, and there's a lot of experts sitting here why it's important. based on our work, there is a much broader competitiveness problem facing the u.s. right now. it's been building for decades. it's not something new. it's not a recession. it's been building for decades, and it's sapping the ability of the american economy to grow, and it's sapping the ability of the standard of living for the average american to rise, and unless we start tackling the real core issues that are making the u.s. less competitive and less attractive for locations for business, we'll go back to the fiscal cliff discussion over and over again. unless we get the economy moving and growing in the long run, these budget problems just are going to recur over and over again. based on our work, we have identified eight areas, as you mentioned, where we find broad consensus where we believe that these things would really move t

at the numbers in the economic realm. drought fueled by uncertainty over the approaching fiscal cliff and tax increases. the jobs report shows the number of people filing for an employment fell to 410,000. the labor department says those numbers are still skewed because of superstorm sandy. the four-week average was a less volatile measure rose to 10,000. and hostess heads to bankruptcy court unable to reach an agreement with the bakers union. last week the company closed its plans after 42 years. some 18,000 plus people will likely lose their jobs. word of the impending liquidation caused a run on hostess products. another union action that could affect you is planned black friday protests. wal-mart filed a complaint with the national relations boards and picketers are mostly union representatives who are trying to force changes in pressure workers and get unionization where they have failed thus far. the liberal group has sent out hundreds of e-mails encouraging people who have nothing to do with wal-mart stage a protest outside the stores. you know, stores across the country. but the labor
